The Design

This home has been highly customised, with inclusions that are tailored to the needs of a rural farming couple including a large laundry and expansive study space for working from home. The design balances resilience and comfort, ensuring the home can withstand the extreme climate of Dirranbandi while offering a quiet and functional space.

Layout

A veranda wraps around the entire perimeter of the property, taking design inspiration from the classic ‘Queenslander’ home. There are two wings, rest (beds and baths) and working (living, kitchen, study and large laundry), connected by the central arrival space with grand piano.

Sustainability

A highly insulated envelope ensures thermal comfort, reducing reliance on mechanical heating and cooling systems. Thermally broken/Low-E glazing enhances energy efficiency by minimising heat transfer while providing natural light.

External blinds will protect windows from direct sun exposure, reducing heat gain and enhancing privacy. A louvred roof system over the deck allows for controlled shading and ventilation, creating an adaptable outdoor living space.

The home is fully off-grid, incorporating solar panels, battery storage, and rainwater harvesting to ensure sustainability and independence in its remote location.
