Landscaping for health, wealth and happiness.

Landscaping can leave a lasting impression, helping to set the tone for the rest of your home. Offering more than just aesthetic benefits, landscaping has an array of environmental, health and economic advantages.

“Gardens are the result of a collaboration between art and nature.” – Penelope Hobhouse

1. Increase the value of your home

Landscaping can add lasting value to your property.

A well-designed and maintained landscape can enhance the overall appeal of your home and attract potential buyers if you wish to sell your property in the future.

From a design perspective, landscaping provides flow and fluency from inside to out. It assists in adding function, form and style to the outdoor areas and helps harmonise your home as a whole.

According to landscape economist John Harris, attractive landscaping can add up to 28% to your home’s overall value. Additionally, according to a research paper by Clemson University Professor Mark S. Henry, raising the standards of your gardening efforts could add significant value to your home (6-7%).

2. Reduce Heating and Cooling Costs

When completed effectively, smart design, strategic choice of plants and careful orientation can help reduce your heating and cooling costs by up to 25%.

In order to achieve cost-savings, the placement and choice of tree, shrub or plant are important. The density, size and shape of a tree will impact the level of shade a tree can generate with deciduous trees generally perfect for blocking out summer sun and keeping the cold out in winter.

Anglesea Beach House

Designed by Fiona Brockhoff Landscape and installed by Ocean Road Landscapes, the clients placed great importance on creating an inviting garden that could be enjoyed with family and friends.

It was essential to the owners for the home to flow effortlessly from inside to out, encouraging interactions with nature and embracing the magical coastal lifestyle.

The inclusion of Indigenous species including Banksia Integrifolia, Billy Buttons and Callistemon, reflects the local flora and attracts an array of native wildlife.

A beautiful swimming pool, abundant lawn space, in-ground trampoline and ample outdoor entertaining space has created the perfect area to socialise, relax and recharge.

3. Positively Impact Health and Wellbeing

The inclusion of plants is a no-brainer for our mental and physical health with benefits including:

– Filtering of pollutants to provide cleaner air in and around homes
– Creating a serene environment and spot for quiet contemplation to positively impact mental health
– Screening plants can help feelings of privacy and safety
– Viewing greenery and plants daily is proven to help reduce stress levels

4. Environmental Benefits

One of the obvious advantages of adding landscaping to your home is the positive environmental impact it can have.

Planting a variety of native plants assists with biodiversity and creates habitat and food sources for local wildlife.

Simple additions that can assist in habitat regeneration include: having water and shelter sources actively available, creating bee hotels for local species and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals.

Investing in healthy lawns and effective landscaping can assist in preventing soil erosion and reduce wastewater run-off, helping to reduce risks of flooding or mudslides from excessive rainfall.

Blackburn House

Set amongst the beautiful towering gums, our Blackburn House dramatically extends over the sloped site, creating a luscious tree-house-like feel.

The beautiful landscaping, garden and pool were completed by Mint Pool & Landscape Design in collaboration with Greener Visions Landscape and TLC Pools.

They focused on utilising native species to create a drought-tolerant oasis that perfectly complemented the home’s natural surroundings and sustainable ethos. The perfect outdoor space for entertaining, relaxing and everything in between.

Balnarring House

The garden was designed by Jim Fogarty Design in consultation with Charles Solomon from Garawana Creative to ensure indigenous protocols were followed.

“Our aim is to engage people with stories of indigenous culture as well as inspire people as to the different uses of Australian plants, especially in coastal areas where preservation of local flora and fauna needs to be valued.”

Deliberately designed to be small in stature for ample outdoor space, a prefab home was consciously chosen to ensure minimal disruption to the wildlife and surrounding landscape.

Indigenous species including cut leaf banksia, bottlebrush, purple loosestrife and clustered everlasting were used to create a colourful, native masterpiece.
